Understanding Mount Marapi's Eruptions: Analysis from an ITB Volcanology Expert

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Mount Marapi, situated in West Sumatra, recently experienced an unexpected eruption on Sunday (3/12/2023) around 14:53 WIB (Western Indonesian Time), catching both hikers and the community off guard. Dr. Mirzam Abdurrachman, a volcanology expert from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), sheds light on this phenomenon, offering insights into the possible causes and implications of the eruption.

Dr. Mirzam suggests that the eruption could have been triggered by an imbalance in the magma chamber, resulting from the accumulation of gasses over the years. He explains that disturbances in the magma chamber's equilibrium, often caused by the injection of new magma, can lead to eruptions. This imbalance, characterized by the buildup of gas pressure, eventually culminates in volcanic activity.

Mount Marapi, known for its eruption cycles ranging from 1 to 17 years, has a history of periodic volcanic activity. He points out that the last significant eruption of Mount Marapi occurred in 1991, suggesting that the recent eruption might have been overdue.

The interaction between geological structures like faults and fractures in the Earth's crust may exacerbate volcanic instability, contributing to sudden eruptions. He underscores the importance of dedicated monitoring systems tailored to each volcano's unique characteristics, coupled with comprehensive risk assessments and community awareness initiatives.
