BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Three industrial engineering students of Institut Teknologi Bandung championed Industrial Engineering Competition organized by Parahyangan Catholic University on 1-4 July 2019. The competition entitled “Developing the Industry Potential with an Enhanced Production System” was participated by students from various universities in Indonesia.

Those three students are Annas Fatkhurrohman, Aryadilla Rivaldi Putra, and Kiendl Valavani Setio, all coming from Industrial Engineering class of 2015. The competition consisted of several phases, started with pre-elimination stage and followed by online test. From the online test, 15 teams passed on to the first semifinal at Atmajaya.

Annas Fatkhurrohman said that the first semifinal was designed like Amazing Race. There were five posts, each consisting of a game related to industrial engineering science. "In the first semifinal, if you win games, you will get bonus scores and more questions, so the opportunity to bag more scores is higher," Annas said.

Fifteen teams who finished the first semifinal continued to the second semifinal, where they were asked to finish a case study about inventory system and operational research. Scores from first and second semifinal were accumulated, leaving 5 teams with highest scores to compete on the final.

Carrying topics about Six Sigma, DMAIC, and other materials in industrial engineering, Annas and team made it to the final and won the first place in Atmajaya Industrial Engineering Competition. According to Annas, the most difficult phase of the competition was the first semifinal, especially during the quiz. The first semifinal also weighed more to the evaluation score than the second semifinal. They also lacked preparation due to each team member preparing for final thesis.

At early post in the first semi-final, Annas and team’s points were far behind other teams’ and hence were unable to enter the top 5 highest score teams. They, however, do not give up. The team were able to enter third place and stay in that position until the second semifinal.

Amidst tight schedules such as final thesis writing, Annas and team still made time for reviewing scientific materials on industrial engineering they learnt long ago or just three days before the competition. For Annas, this competition is different with other competitions he had previously competed in. “Before the final presentation, I was nervous because the time given to do the final case was tight while we can only use two laptops. And during presentation, we did it smoothly when delivering the materials and responding to the jury. The jury even looked satisfied at our responds. It feels incredible to be able to win,” said Annas

Annas said that the result never betrays the effort. Do not give up early. It is important to believe and hopefully everything will go well.
