BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - The digital transformation era is one of the hot topics, mainly because of its significant efficiency in various industries. On Saturday (6/2/2021), HMTM "PATRA" ITB, SPE ITB SC, and IATMI SM ITB held an Integrated Petroleum Guest Lecture (IPGL). IPGL is a webinar, part of Integrated Petroleum Festival events entitled "Digital Transformation for Intensifying Smart Oilfields."

The webinar invited two speakers, namely Eko Apolianto and Yunus Alamsyah.

BP Experience: Digital Transformation And Big Data Analytic To Deal With The Future

Eko Apolianto, the area manager at BP, said that the oil and gas industry needs fast and real-time transfer data to work as an extensive system.
"Also, good management skills are needed because engineers are required to monitor these data," he explained.

Big data consists of raw data, seismic data, geospatial data, data from laboratory analysis, daily production reports, drilling data, and visualization. "Big data will help engineers to make decisions faster," Eko said.

Eko concluded that there are three points towards modernization and transformation: agility, digital, and mindset. Agility is how machines change the way humans do; digital is how to change how humans convey things, and the mindset is how machines imitate the way humans think. The modernization and transformation aim to increase efficiency and reduce complexity."

Introduction to Oil Field Digitalization

Yunus Alamsyah, the well-reliability and optimization manager of Chevron Pacific Indonesia (CPI), presented his speech entitled "Digital Future of Oil and Gas and Energy". He concerns with the current condition of oil prices and the penetration of digitalization. Many oil and gas companies have cut their employees and budget to surviving the business.

Yunus Alamsyah explained three reasons why oil companies have to digitalize; profit potential, fluctuating prices, and reservoir management.
"The gradual change of transformation in every sector of the business level will help the company to survive. There is no need to be pessimistic about losing jobs due to digitization, because humans will adjust to things that cannot be done by machines. Digital may cut a portion of jobs, but it also may create additional jobs," he concluded.
