BANDUNG, itb.ac.id — The Upside Down Team that consists of Celine Caroline (Pharmaceutical Science and Technology 2020), Naqisya Arifani (Mathematics 2020), and Jessica Safira (University of Indonesia) won 2nd place in the 2022 Paragon Hackathon, a programming and software development competition that was held on 13 June – 21 August 2022.

The idea of Luminous was inspired by the 10-steps skincare trend that is widely discussed among Indonesian women. The product can be used by everyone, but its main targets are girls who are either pursuing their education or are working.

"Skin care is very important for both teenage girls and adult women. However, with their tight schedule and limited free time, many think that they do not have time to regularly apply skincare products. In addition, many Indonesian women find it difficult to choose the right skincare, experiencing incompatibility with the product that can result in damage to facial skin," Celine explained.

Celine elaborated that Luminous is a 4-in-1 beauty device that can gradually release 4 skincare types: toner, essence, serum, and moisturizer. Before applying Luminous, users are encouraged to identify their skin conditions via AI provided in the Luminous application.

"The results of the AI’s analysis help determine users’ skin type and conditions. They can also get skincare recommendations that match their facial profile, which can be ascertained for its compatibility. Users can view their skincare progress in the Skin Diary feature as well.”

During the first phase of the contest, 144 participating teams submitted their ideas. 10 teams are selected as finalists to compete in the final round. In the final round, Naqi recounted that her team’s schedule was packed with various agendas within a week like the Meet Up Day, Training Session, Mentoring Day, Hack Day, Demo Day, and Awarding Night within 1 week.

"During Mentoring Day, we had the chance to discuss our project with mentors who excel in the field of product and software development. On the other hand, we manifested our initiated product while making a presentation and TVC video for pitching. We finally presented the results of our hard work to the judges for 15 minutes on Demo Day.”

This is the first time the three students have participated in a hackathon. Despite the lack of preparation due to nearly late registration, the Upside Down team immediately brainstormed all ideas and conducted relevant research. Within 32 hours, they managed to create their application using JavaScript.

According to Celine, the key to winning is not to be afraid to try anything. "Competing, regardless of the type of competition, will add experience to life. Learning by doing may bring forth new knowledge. What happens in the end is simply a bonus. The most important thing is that we have done our best to compete."
