ITB Won South Asia Geosciences Student Conference 2016
BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Obtaining another achievement, ITB became the champion in the South Asian Geosciences Student Conference (SAGSC) 2016. The event held on Monday to Wednesday (22-24/08/16) at the University of Gajah Mada, Yogyakarta, was organized by the Society of Exploration Geophysicist (SEG). The entire contingent of ITB originating from the Geophysical Engineering and Geological Engineering won the 2nd and 3rd place in the Geo Bowl, as well as the best oral presentation predicate in the Plenary Session Conference on Wednesday (24/08/16). SAGSC 2016, which became the second time since it was first held in 2015, is a series of events consisting of exhibitions, conferences, field trips, and competitions devoted for students of Geosciences. This year, ITB sent 6 delegations divided into two teams for the Geo Bowl, consisting of Dhanissa Dilija Zoditama, Ridho Nanda Pratama, and M. Hidayat (Geophysical Engineering 2012) and also Farid Muhammad, Fadhli Ramadhana Atarita (Geophysical Engineering 2013), and Firman Habib (Geological Engineering 2013). For the Plenary Session Conference, ITB was represented by Kadek Hendrawan Palgunadi and Indira Viantini (Geophysical Engineering 2012).
In the Geo Bowl event, participants were tested for their abilities to quickly and precisely answer the questions related to the theme of mining, petroleum, and geothermal. Whereas in the Plenary Session Conference, ITB presented 2 tectonic-and-exploration-themed papers titled "A Novel Approach Comparison of Pseudo-elastic Impedance Curve in the Rock Physics" and "The Probability of Occurance Megathrust Earthquake in Sumatra by Correlation Distance and Statistical Approximation". The papers presented were the results of research, and were judged by the jury based on the difficulty level, renewal of methods, manner of presentation, and the answers given in the Q&A session.
This achievement adds to the long track record of ITB achievements in the field of Geosciences. Last July, Geophysical Engineering ITB also made the nation proud by the presentation of papers at an international Geoscience conference in Poland. This success is expected to trigger more ITB students to gain achievements. "Joining competitions can really enhance our experience and grow our competing spirit. It can also be used as a measure to know the extent of our knowledge and improve our shortcomings," Dayat said while giving motivations to other ITB academicians.
