BANDUNG, itb.ac.id—Institut Teknologi Bandung students once again won achievements in the invention and innovation field. This time, the achievement was presented by the Kaisar Planow Team who managed to win a gold medal from the World Young Inventors Exhibition (WYIE) 2022 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

In that competition, the team designed a renewable power plant in Mundu Bay titled “Design of Integrated Coastal Defense and Smart Grid Renewable Energy Power Plant for Mundu Bay Sustainable Development Based on Shoreline Management Plant” which was the result of the thoughts of Amalia Nanda Syafira (PWK 19), Ayubella Anggraini Leksono (PWK 19), Evita Mahar Dewi (PWK 19), Jerome Gerand Miracle Tambatjong (KL 19), dan Rusdianto Efenddi (KL 19).

“This research was backed by the fact that Cirebon is a special economic area located in the Segitiga Rebana area including Subang, Majalengka, Indramayu, Cirebon, and Sumedang,” Rusdianto explained. He added how that area can boost the economic growth of the West Java province as big as 10,91 percent in 2023.

Mundu Bay became the coastal defense case study location that referred to the Shoreline Management Plan (SMP). “According to the change analysis of land usage, Mundu Bay will be transformed to an industrial area. On the other hand, Mundu Bay also has a risk of abrasion, erosion, as well as flooding. Taking the risks of disasters into account has to be done to shift the region’s function as an industrial area,” Rudianto continued.

Ayubella stated that Mundu Bay will be a crucial area which prioritizes its development and become the economic heart in Cirebon Regency itself up to West Java and Indonesia.

The integrated system this team offered includes breakwater as a coastal defense structure, a solar power plant behind the breakwater, a small to medium sized wind power plant, a wave power farm situated in the front, a warehouse as an energy control and education center, and mangrove tourism attraction for recreation. That design not only resolved the current ongoing conditions, it also created a sustainable design.

“That area has potential for waves that can be used as an alternative energy source. We already checked the tide difference each time and analyzed tides that showed indications of extreme abrasion. According to our calculations, the construction of this power farm is also economically beneficial. Moreover, this is a form of new renewable energy education to the people since wave power farms are still less popular than other types of renewable energy," Rusdianto said on Monday (27/6/2022).

They have been preparing since mid-March and the peak activity took place on May 26-27. More than 200 teams from 9 different countries met and showed their own innovations. Team Kaisar Planow’s achievement could not be separated from the guidance and support of Ir. Entin Agustini Karjadi, MCE, Ph.D., Ir. Ahmad Mukhlis Firdaus, S.T., M.T., DPhill., and Ridwan Sutriadi, S.T., M.T., Ph.D..

Rusdianto hopes to be more innovative and able to prepare the team as best as possible, as well as seek adequate funding to participate in the competition. “If you have an idea just try to develop it. There may be many obstacles, but ideas without executions will be meaningless,” he concluded.
