BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – A while ago, students from the Geodesy and Geomatics Study Program ITB won the 1st hoped position in the Scientific Paper National Competition that was organized by Mataram University, Lombok. Those students are Cokro Santoso, Fahmi Mahardika, and Infandra Kusuma Cahya Reynaldi. This competition began in March 2022, and its final stage was from May 26 to May 29.

For the competition, the team submitted an essay titled "Air Pollution Spatial Modelling by Utilizing Remote Sensing Data as a Means to Identify Land Use Effect to Support Sustainable Development in Indonesia". Their essay seeks to identify the impact of different types of land use on air pollution. "So, if a residential area is causing air pollution because of the high concentration of NO2 that they emitted, then a solution will be advised to that specific residential area, such as building new open green space or rehabilitating its surrounding environment," explained Cokro when contacted through Line some time ago.

This essay is a part of a final assignment for one of the courses that they took. Increasing air pollution and large-scale land conversion were chosen as the background topic for their essay. "We hope that this essay can be more dynamic and can act as a resource in monitoring air pollution and the impact of land conversion," explained Cokro.

Before reaching the final sage, they have gone through some preparations. They admitted that their preparation was too sudden. "Our preparation was too sudden because our initial intention was just to go on a holiday. But seeing other competitors, we became motivated to compete in this competition. Because we do not have much time, we only manage to create simple earth engine apps, but seeing other competitors come to the location bringing their live models, we became more motivated to improve our earth engine apps," said Cokro.

Before they went to Lombok, the team faced financial difficulty, but this difficulty was solved thanks to the Ditmawa ITB funding. "We are very grateful to the Ditmawa ITB who funded our participation in this competition, to our supervisor Dr. Eng. Anjar Dimara Sakti, and all of the Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering ITB civitas," said Cokro.

They then left a message for ITB students that says we need to believe in ourselves when participating in a competition and to do full preparation for it. They also consider competition as a means of recreation sidelining academic activities. "Let's compete, so you can also go on a holiday," said Cokro.
