ITB GMUNC Delegates Won 5 Awards in Singapore Model United Nations

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Ganesha Model United Nations Club Unit (GMUNC) sent their best delegates to compete in Singapore Model United Nations (SMUN) at National University of Singapore on 10-13 June 2019.

The GMUNC delegates received 5 awards, namely Honorable Mention Historical Crisis Committee for Jordi Muhammad W (MS’17), Honorable Mention World Health Organization for Angelica Wiliana (BE’18), Verbal Recommendation World Trade Organization (WTO) for Aninda Annisa (MB’20), Verbal Recommendation Press Corps for Radyani Prasasya (BA’17) and Best Delegate Historical Committee for Hanif Alfada (TK’17).

Model United Nations, known as MUN, is a UN simulation conference. Participants play a role as delegations of certain countries and then discuss certain issues. Decisions made by bodies under UN are issued in the form of resolution which is voted and agreed by members of UN before it is adopted. For this reason, participants of MUN should possess capability in public speaking, negotiation, and drafting in order to safeguard national interest and pass agreed resolution.

Singapore MUN saw participants from countries in Asia and Africa, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Ghana, Thailand, India, China, Sri Lanka, South Korea, and many others.

According to Hanif who received Best Delegates Historical Committee, delegates of GMUNC first had to participate in selection process organized by GMUNC. The selection was carried out three months before the competition. It was then followed by intensive training for selected participants which includes training about the material, speech, and drafting. Besides independent training, GMUNC also collaborate with other universities such as Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) and Parahyangan Catholic University (Unpar) to conduct joint simulation.

Singapore MUN 2019 is the 16th held SMUN and is one of high profile MUN in South East Asia and is well-known by MUN Indonesia circuit. “I participate in this year’s SMUN because I last year but I did not win any. This year I tried again,” Hanif said.

According to Hanif, the toughest opponents are Singapore delegates because they are more experienced. He added that despite commonly participated by students from Department of Law or International Relation, this competition is valuable for students from any educational background because it develops many soft skills and hard skills.
