BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - The Faculty of Fine Arts and Design (FAD) at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) is hosting the 2023 International Conference of Art, Craft, Culture, and Design (Icon Arccade) from Wednesday to Friday, September 11 to 13, 2023, at ITB Ganesha Campus. This biennial event is being held for the third time in 2023 by FSRD ITB, with the first Icon Arcade taking place in 2017 and the second in 2021.

The theme of this year's conference is "Fluid & Ubiquitous," reflecting the determination to adapt and respond to continuously changing global conditions filled with uncertainty. With creativity, innovation, and design, the boundaries between humans, nature, and everything in between are blurred in the hope of exploring new opportunities for long-term impact and growth.

Icon Arcade 2023 was officially opened by the Rector of ITB, Prof. Reini Wirahadikusumah, Ph.D. The event featured four plenary speakers from four different countries:

  1. Associate Professor, University of Tokyo, Akira Matsuda, Ph.D.;
  2. Associate Professor, Strategic Design and Management, Parsons School of Design and Vice Provost and Academic Dean, Continuing and Professional Education, The New School, Dr. Mariana Amatullo;
  3. Deputy President and Provost, LASALLE I University of the Arts Singapore, Venka Purushothaman, Ph.D.;
  4. Cultural Studies, Design, Bandung Institute of Technology, Prof. Dr. Yasraf Amir Piliang, M.A.

The conference explores five sub-themes at the forefront of contemporary design:

  1. Care: Emphasizes the importance of carrying out design practices by considering aspects of empathy and attention to both humans and the environment.
  2. Systemic Design: Focuses on a holistic design approach that considers interconnections and the broader system.
  3. Cross-Cultural Identity: Showcasing the global richness of culture and its influence on design.
  4. Object as an Agency: Recognizes the capacity of objects to affect change and communicate meaning.
  5. Transmateriality: Investigates the use of innovative materials and technologies to create sustainable and innovative designs.

In addition to international conferences, various other events such as exhibitions, workshops, lectures, panel discussions, and interactive installations are taking place. Renowned designers, architects, and artists from around the world are participating, providing valuable insights and inspiration to participants.

“We are thrilled to host Icon Arcade for the third time, bringing together the brightest minds in design and architecture to explore the limitless possibilities within our field. This year's theme reflects the adaptable and inclusive nature of design, inviting us to challenge boundaries and create a better and more sustainable world," said the Dean of FSRD ITB, Dr. Andryanto Rikrik Kusmara, S.Sn., M.Sn.

The event is open to the general public, including students, professionals, and enthusiasts interested in the world of design and architecture. With this activity, participants gain the unique experience of engaging with cutting-edge concepts, networking with industry leaders, and immersing themselves in the diverse world of design.
