BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Permadi Mohammad Nurhikmah, the Head of the Energy Division at the Energy and Mineral Resources Agency (ESDM) of West Java, conveyed various initiatives and action plans undertaken by the West Java Provincial Government in facing the challenges of climate change, particularly concerning energy planning in the region. He disclosed this at the Symposium on Climate Change at the Bandung Institute of Technology (PPI ITB), themed 'Post-COP28 UNFCCC: Reflections on Climate Governance in the Just Energy Transition in Indonesia,' held on Thursday (12/14/2023).

This event was held in a hybrid format, with offline activity taking place at the Conference Hall, CRCS Building, ITB Ganesha Campus, Bandung, while also streaming on the Zoom Meeting platform.

In his presentation, Permadi discussed various initiatives and action plans implemented by the West Java Provincial Government to tackle the challenges of climate change, especially the regional energy plans.

Permadi explained that West Java had ratified the Paris Agreement with a target reduction of emissions by 31.89% through its own efforts and 43.2% with external support. He also mentioned the primary focus on clean, affordable, and secure energy for all, in line with the latest Government Regulations.

In the context of energy in West Java, he mentioned that the province has considerable potential for renewable energy sources (EBT). 'Through the mapping of renewable energy resources, West Java has a potential of around 192 gigawatts equivalent, with only 2% currently being utilized,' he stated.

The West Java Provincial Government has also formulated a Regional Energy General Plan with a target share of new renewable energy sources (EBT) at 20% by 2025 and 28% by 2050. However, calculations indicate that by September 2022, West Java had already reached 25.81% (which is nearing the 2025 target), indicating the need for plan adjustments.

Permadi also conveyed that they are formulating a revision of the national energy policy, focusing on decarbonization through the optimization of renewable energy utilization, reduction of fossil energy usage, development of nuclear and hydrogen energy, as well as other decarbonization technologies.

In the future energy projections, the West Java Provincial Government also highlights energy efficiency, industrial sector electrification, electric vehicle penetration, and various other supportive policies aimed at achieving the net-zero emissions target by 2055.

"The government also endeavors to involve the private sector in investments related to energy conservation and efficiency," expressed Permadi.

The symposium provided a clear overview of the commitment and concrete steps taken by the West Java Provincial Government in addressing climate change and moving towards an equitable energy transition. With the updated plans and projections presented, it is hoped that West Java can become a pioneer in achieving the net-zero emissions target in Indonesia.
