Bioengineering (BE) is an interdisciplinary of Biosciences and Engineering that is applied in the biosystem, in which the objective is to increase the efficiency of functions and benefits of biosystems for the bioindustry. The term of engineering in this study defines as engineering biological processes, operating engineered biological agents, manufacturing new biosystem-based equipment or technology for the development of biomaterials. Bioengineering can be applied in engineering production systems for the development of the bioproduct industry.
As an effort to revitalize Indonesia’s industry, SDH-based industries are being actively developed. One of important bioproduct industry in Indonesia is the production of Biofuels (BBN), as the effort to utilize alternative energy. In the development of the bioindustry of vegetal products, whether they are biofuels or other bioproducts, Bioengineers who have a background in Biological Science and Engineering and who able to optimize production efficiency through biosystem-based engineering will highly be needed. The required Bioengineers must understand that plant agents are ‘production machines’ and an integral part of the production system.
This study program isn’t only contributing as a bridge between Engineering and Humanities, but also answers the community’s needs for Bioengineers who can apply the basics of Engineering in the development of the bioproducts industry with an emphasis on vegetal products.
Lectures for the Bioengineering Study Program will be held at two ITB campuses, namely Ganesa campus and Jatinangor campus.
The rapid development of Science and Technology (IPTEK) in the fields of agriculture, health, food-fed, and the pharmaceutical industry over the last few decades, demands the development of downstream stages to increase the efficiency and productivity of biological agents on an industrial scale. To support this, it requires mastery of related engineering, especially in the design of a mass production system, structure calculations, mechanization, labor, and downstream process technology. Therefore, Bioengineers with special competencies in biological system engineering are needed. Bioengineers are highly needed in the system design and mass production of biomaterials and bioproducts, such as enzymes, therapeutic proteins, bioactive compounds, bioenergy, biomembrane, or biodegradable plastics.
