The Hilal Observation of Muharram 1442H/2021M at Bosscha Observatory

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id—Bosscha Observatory of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), as an astronomical research and education institute, held a mandate from the Indonesia ministry of religion to conduct the hilal observation. A media briefing and conference regarding the observation was held on Saturday (10/4/2021). The conference was presented by Premana W. Premadi, Ph.D.

Bosscha Observatory team will conduct the hilal observation starting on Saturday (10/4/2021) to Monday (12/4/2021). The observation took place at the Bosscha Observatory, Lembang, West Java. The observation will start in the afternoon and the search for the early crescent will be adjusted after the sunset. The crescent which will be observed after dusk will mark the start of Ramadan.

The instrument that will be used is a 106mm and a 66mm refractor-type telescope. Both are equipped with CCD based camera detectors capable for further image processing.

This hilal observation activity is a private event that can only be attended by Bosscha Observatories staff. The decision is to prevent large crowd gathering and comply with COVID-19 health standards.

The observation will be broadcasted to the public via live streaming on Bosccha Observatory live YouTube channel (accessible by the following link:)
Bosscha Observatory mission is to provide the government and authority with the results of calculations, observations, and research. The team is also ready to provide further professional advice at the isbat council if needed.
