Addressing Interdisciplinary Problems, ITB Students Won Meritorious Award
BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Three students of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) earned an international-level achievement in Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). They earned the Meritorious Winner on the competition that was held on 24-28 January 2019.
The team consist of members from Mathematics Study Program class of 2016. They are Kamal Khairudin Sukandar, Kemal Aziez Rachmansyah, and Nia Dewi Nofianti under Nuning Nuraini as the advisor. Mathematics program of ITB since 2012 has regularly competed on this annual competition, which is a prestigious world competition on mathematics model organized by Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP).
Until 2019, Mathematics program of ITB has earned 5 meritorious awards. MCM is about mathematics modeling that addresses problems in the world which challenges participants to clarify, analyze, and propose solution for problems raised.
The competition raised six problems that can be selected by participants. Three problems are regarding mathematics model, and three problems regarding interdisciplinary model. In total, there were 14,108 participants from all over the world. Among the teams that represents Mathematics Study Program of ITB, one team won meritorious award, one team won honorable mention, and three teams won successful participants.
Out of those six problems, Kamal, Kemal, and Nia selected the interdisciplinary problem. It was explained by Nia, one of the team members, that all participants should propose solutions on emergency evacuation in Louvre Museum, France. Interestingly, none of the team members have ever visited the museum. Hence, when designing their analysis, they had to use their creativity to visualize the building’s condition, the room, width of lane, available emergency exit, etc.
Defending the achievement each year is a hard work. It is the commitment of Center for Mathematical Modelling and Simulation (PPMS), hence all teams in ITB are prepared well so that they will earn the best results. The event is important for Mathematics Study Program of ITB because it can measure ITB students in international mathematics modelling. “The difficulties we face is that this is the first time we participate in modelling competition,” Nia said.
No pain, no gain is truly experienced by the team. For the three of them, this is their first participation in mathematical modelling. Hence, there are tools they have yet to learn to solve the problem. They also met problems in team work and differing opinions for their solution. Fortunately, Kamal, Kemal, and Nia at the end made the team work well.
