ITB and UJAT Mexico Develop Agricultural Technology Together

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Located in Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico (03-08/08/15), Rector of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Prof. Dr. Ir. Kadarsah Suryadi, DEA, attended a seminar by Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco (UJAT). From Indonesia, Rector of Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), Prof. Suhardiyanto Herrera, Indonesian Ambassador in Mexico, Yusra Khan, and researchers from ITB and IPB also came to the event.

UJAT is one of the largest and leading universities in Tabasco, which has stood since 1861. The University is also included in the list of best universities in Mexico based on ratings from the Ministry of Education of Mexico (SEP).

The joint seminar is an implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UJAT and ITB and UJAT and IPB, which was signed in 2014 and 2013, respectively. In the seminar, Rector of UJAT, Dr. José Manuel Piña Gutiérrez, said that he hoped to transfer technology to Indonesia in the field of agriculture, particularly palm oil, which was the superior value of Indonesia.

"UJAT's desire to enhance cooperation with ITB and IPB was welcomed by the Ambassador of Indonesia in Mexico as a part of strengthening bilateral relations between Indonesia and Mexico," said Indonesian Embassy staff in a press release received by Tempo on Sunday (09/08/15).

Rector of ITB at the seminar explained various research and technological innovations  that has been run by ITB researchers. ITB had already experienced in doing international cooperation, especially in the development of science and technology. With the potential and facilities owned by ITB, Ambassador Yusra Khan invited the civitas academica of UJAT to come to ITB in order to gain knowledge and conduct joint research.

Beside seminar, Indonesian delegations also paid some visits to civitas academica of UJAT, governor of Tabasco, Arturo Núñez Jiménez, government officials from the Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Energy, businessmen in Tabasco, UJAT research center, and  the main plantation and farm in Tabasco.

Some forms of cooperation had also been agreed by ITB, IPB, and UJAT. Firstly, a consortium between ITB, IPB, and UJAT would be built to hold annual meetings regularly. In addition, there would be exchange of visiting-professors between universities that were members of the consortium. Secondly, there would be a procurement of flying boat "aircraft wing in surface effect" and the drone modified by ITB for entrepreneurs in Tabasco. A plan of rancher and oil palm plantations in Tabasco to visit Indonesia was also made. Third, a plan of conducting a joint research on embryo transfer, palm oil and other biomass processing into fuels and other side refined products. The last, there would be formed a joint Master degree program in the field of actuarial studies (finance) between ITB and UJAT, and the field of food science and agronomitropical between UJAT and IPB.
