Description
As the Maritime Continent, Indonesia has particular characteristics and roles for the surrounding climate. The thermohaline circulation flows through the Indonesian Archipelago from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean, known as the Indonesian Throughflow. It governs the environment for the West Pacific and East Indian regions. The El Nino Southern Oscillation, Indian Ocean Dipole, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and Madden Julian Oscillation modulate the complexity of Ocean–Atmosphere interaction of the region. Indonesia also has the longest volcano-magnetic and most complex seismic path.

Research Topics
Based on the challenge explained, but not limiting the study to a global scale, The study program offers three main focuses in Earth Science: Oceanography, Atmospheric Science, and Seismology.

Objectives
Accredited “A” in BAN-PT, this program’s educational objectives are to :
  1. Mastering theories, concepts, and paradigms in earth science and technology.
  2. Carry out research and develop earth science and technology through independent research, and be able to transfer knowledge to the scientific community.
  3. Perform synthesis and evaluation and have broad insights into Oceanography, Atmospheric Science, Seismology, and other related fields of science.
  4. Use knowledge and skills to solve complex problems in Oceanography, Atmospheric Science, and Seismology, including those which require an interdisciplinary approach with other disciplines.
  5. Have an honest and open attitude and be educated with great curiosity.
Doctoral education activities include:
  1. Enhancing synthetic and evaluative skills in their field of knowledge to support the ability to contribute to the development of science.
  2. Providing a broad, solid, and up-to-date knowledge base.
  3. Conducting research and participating in lecture activities that lead students to state-of-the-art research areas they will participate in, providing the depth of insight that a doctorate should have.

Career Prospect
The alumni of the study program are mostly developing and establishing careers in related fields, mainly in governmental institutions like the National Research and Innovation Agency, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Bureau, Centre of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation, the Universities, Sensors, and Equipment for Earth Science Companies, and Consultant Services for the private sectors. Entrepreneurship and international exposure are included within the study program using exchange students, summer courses, and inbound/outbound programs with overseas partner Universities.
