Institut Teknologi Bandung

Twenty years ago, in 1996, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) became the first educational institution that has access to high-speed Internet network in Indonesia. The Internet network access in ITB was held in cooperation with the program AI3 (Asian Internet Interconnection Initiatives) of the WIDE Project in Japan via satellite JCSAT-3.

ITB is one of four first partner in AI3 cooperation, with the other partner is the Japanese WIDE Project, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) Thailand, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Satellite technology is used Ku-Band technology which is quite revolutionary in his time.

Afterwards, ITB connecting the AI3 network with a number of colleges / universities / education institution in Indonesia, as an effort to establish a network between universities and education institution in Indonesia. So universities in Indonesia will be connected to each other and exchange knowledge and information.

For Bandung itself, Universitas Parahyangan (Unpar), Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), Bandung Islamic University (Unisba), the Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP, now the Indonesian Education University / UPI), connected to  ITB. From outside the area, including the University of Syiah Kuala in Aceh, Lampung University (Unila), Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (Unsoed), University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) and a number of other universities. The connection is done by using satellite bandwidth leased from PT Elektrindo.

The existence of high-speed Internet network in colleges and educational institutes have become the beginning of the emergence of a variety of technologies supporting the spread of Internet access in Indonesia, such as:

Development of Internet in Indonesia is happening is not merely the development of technology, but what really happens is opening horizons for Indonesian people who are not only able to use the Internet connection, but is able to develop the infrastructure and Internet services independently.

This capability which increases the confidence the people of Indonesia to be able to make a change in society, which is partly characterized by the following events:

After twenty years, Bandung Institute of Technology wants to commemorate the historic moment, the events, the 20th anniversary of the Internet network at the Bandung Institute of Technology was named "20th Anniversary Internet in ITB" in conjunction with the anniversary of the 20th anniversary of AI3 network and 15th anniversary of SOI-ASIA network.
